Willie Weldon Busby, age 79, passed away on September 14, 2025, at the Veteran's Affairs Hospital in Lake City, Florida, after an extended illness. Born on September 1, 1946, in Decatur County, Georgia, Willie dedicated his life to both his family and his country.
A proud veteran, Willie served two years in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot and gunner. His service to his nation was marked by bravery, and he was awarded the Purple Heart after being shot down during his duty. This valor informed both his character and his career path.
Willie's career in law enforcement spanned over two decades, during which he held positions as a road deputy for the Union County Sheriff's Department, a correctional officer with the Department of Corrections, and an instructor with Florida Fish & Game. His commitment to justice and community service was evident throughout his distinguished career.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Willie found joy in a variety of hobbies. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing, often sharing his musical talents with those he loved. An avid fan of fishing, he also spent many enjoyable hours watching the Atlanta Braves and NASCAR, immersing himself in the excitement of sports.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 49 years, Burnice Busby, along with their cherished children: Tammy Busby, Michael (Debra) Baggett, Michelle (Jerry) Bryan, Heath Baggett, and Tina Busby. Willie's legacy continues through his grandchildren—Savannah Baggett, Jeremy Anderson, Aelias Strickland, Madison Strickland, Scott Robertson, Zachary (Julie) Robertson, Cheyenne (Richard) Lee, Dakota (Chole) Bryan, and Rebecca (David) Alderman—as well as his great-grandchildren: McKenzie Foss, McKayla Alderman, Anthony Robertson, Hunter Robertson, Ellie Robertson, Emberlyn Robertson, Bobby Lee, Gunner Bryan, Balvenie Bryan, and one on the way; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Willie is preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Lucy Olene Busby, and his eight siblings.
