Mr. Wayne Hayes, age 90, passed away peacefully at E.T. York Care Center in Gainesville on April 12, 2023. Wayne was born in Brooker, FL to the late Philip and Edna Strickland Hayes on May 10, 1932. He grew up in Gainesville and after graduation joined the U.S. Army. After a tour of duty in Korea during the Korean War, he moved to Tennessee. He earned his master's degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and worked in hospital administration for the next 40 years. After retirement in 2000, he moved back to Brooker to spent time with his siblings before traveling all seven continents. He also loved the Lord and his church, Seventh-day Adventist Church in Gainesville. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Edna Hayes and his 4 siblings.
Wayne is survived by his children, Doug (Darlene) Hayes of Clarksville, TN, Don (Judy) Hayes of Portland, TN, Jean (Chris) Zimnoski of Strafford, NH, and Joanie Hayes of Murfreesboro, TN; his grandchildren, Wayne, Amanda, Michael, Lucas, Rachel, Rebecca, Robyn, Emily, and Jamie; 16 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family.
A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Archer-Milton Funeral Home, Lake Butler. The family will receive friends for a visitation beginning at 10:00am. Wayne will be laid to rest immediately following the service at Elzey Chapel Cemetery with military honors.
