Kirby Wayne Johns, a beloved and fun-loving husband, dad, papa, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, at the Lake City VA Medical Center after an extended illness. Born on November 30, 1947, in Starke, Florida, Kirby lived a life full of warmth, laughter, and loving devotion to his family and friends.
Kirby graduated from high school in 1967, shortly after which he answered the call of duty by joining the United States Army. He proudly served for three years, including a courageous tour in the Vietnam War. His time in the military instilled in him a deep sense of honor and commitment and these qualities remained with him throughout his life’s journey.
Following his service, Kirby provided for his family with a successful career in sales, working with various companies such as Snap-on and City Electric before retiring from Horizon Industries. His professional journey was marked by his outgoing nature and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His colleagues and customers alike admired his approachable demeanor and his gift for friendly and genuine conversation — traits that truly reflected who he was.
Kirby's personality was nothing short of infectious. Known for being talkative and a jokester, he never met a stranger. His stories and quick wit brought smiles to many faces, and he had an uncanny ability to brighten any room he entered. One of his simple joys was his daily breakfast routine at Waffle House, a place where he loved the coffee, felt at home, enjoyed picking on the wait staff and talking with the local restaurant goers.
Outside of work and social laughter, Kirby spent his time in the great outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, passions that offered him moments of peaceful reflection, connection with nature, and precious time with family and friends. These activities were not just hobbies but integral parts of who he was.
Kirby is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Diane Johns, with whom he shared a partnership rich in love and companionship. Together, they raised children who continue to honor his legacy: Adam Johns and his wife Leslie of Middleburg, and Tara Crews and her husband Jeff Gordon of Tampa. Kirby was “Papa” to grandchildren Scott and Taylor Johns, Lane Johns, and Rachel Johns, along with his great-granddaughter, Catherine. Kirby was also blessed with a loving and devoted caregiver Ruby Martin.
Family was everything to Kirby, and he leaves behind his brothers Terry, Gary, Wilford Jr., and David Johns, all residing in LaCrosse, as well as his sister Marilyn and her husband Tommy Brock of Georgia. Though his father, Wilford Johns, Sr. and step-mother Shirley Johns; mother, Florence Johns; and brothers Randy and Ronnie Johns have preceded him in death, their memories remain deeply woven into the fabric of Kirby’s story.
As we say goodbye to Kirby - our husband, dad, papa, great-grandfather and friend on this earth - we look forward to meeting him again in heaven where his smile and warm hugs will once again greet us.
Visitation will be held on May 21, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Archer-Milton Funeral Home, located at 55 N Lake Ave, Lake Butler, Florida. Following this, a graveside service will take place at Mt. Zion/Swift Creek Cemetery with military honors.
