Joseph Lamar Malphurs, Jr., known to most as Joey, passed away on October 24, 2026, at North Florida Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born on October 26, 1962, in Gainesville, Florida to the late Lamar and Carol Malphurs.
Joey devoted many years of his life to public service, working as a firefighter and paramedic with both Alachua and Union Counties until his retirement. His career reflected a steady commitment to helping others and serving his community with courage and compassion.
Outside of his work, Joey found great joy in music. He loved playing music and singing, and he especially enjoyed singing with the Traxler song Farmers and hosting them once a month. These gatherings and shared songs were a meaningful part of his life and brought happiness to those around him.
Joey will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his husband of 26 years, Greg Whitson; his brother, Tony Malphurs, and sister-in-law, Becky Malphurs; his mother-in-law, Peggy Hamby; and his brother-in-law, Carroll (Christine) Hamby. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Zeb Bennett, Macy Malphurs, Zeke Malphurs, Skyler (Sky) Hamby, and Devon (Emily) Hamby, who were an important part of his family circle, as well as by his great-nephews, Toby Parker and Wyatt, his great-niece, Raelyn, and special aunt, Ann Hamby. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Lamar and Carol Malphurs.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on October 29, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Spring Hill United Methodist Church. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the church.
