James Paul Thornton, affectionately known as "Pete," passed away on April 1, 2026, at E.T. York Care Center in Gainesville, Florida, following an extended illness. Born on July 26, 1948, in Raiford, FL, he lived a life marked by dedication, kindness, and service to both his family and community.
Pete was a skilled mechanic who owned and operated Thornton Auto Salvage for over 40 years, demonstrating a strong work ethic and a passion for restoring old cars—a hobby that brought him great joy. In addition to his mechanical talents, he loved fishing, finding solace and pleasure in the calm of the water. His character was thoughtful and stoic yet warm and loving; those who knew him remember him as a giving and talkative man who dearly loved the Lord.
Pete was an active member of the Raiford Mason Lodge #82 and the Shriners, organizations through which he engaged in community and fellowship.
James "Pete" Thornton was preceded in death by his parents, Hance and Mary Thornton; step-mother, Lois Thornton; his first wife, Janet Ann Thornton; and his brother, Franklin Wilkes.
He is survived by his wife, Shirleyanne Hinchman; his children: James (Angela) Thornton, Sr., Mary (George) Konkel, and Annette (Clint) Everett; and his beloved grandchildren: James Hance Thornton, Jr., Justin Edward Thornton, Garrett Andrew Thornton, Emily Savannah Moore, George Wyatt Konkel, Brittany (Eli) Curl, and Bryson Noah Wilkes. He also took great pride in his great-grandchildren: Stetson Sumner, Faith Sumner, and Symphony Thornton. His step-son - Alan (Christi) Hinchman; his sons, Reese (Neely) Hinchman, Riley Hinchman, and their children, Maggie, Hallie, and Shepherd Hinchman will all miss him dearly; along with his brother, Larry Thornton.
Services to honor Pete's life will be held at Archer-Milton Funeral Home, Lake Butler, FL. A visitation will take place on Monday, April 6, 2026, starting at 1:30 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Pete will be laid to rest immediately following the service at Padgett Cemetery in Middleburg.
