Dwight Oliver Hersey, 71, of Worthington Springs, Florida passed away peacefully on January 11, 2021 at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville. He was born on May 30, 1949, to Clyde and Geneva (Alford) Hersey. He grew up in Theressa, FL and graduated from Bradford County High in1967. That same year, he married the love of his life, Lois Elaine Douglass. After marriage, they moved to Union County and Dwight enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. After his service, he began driving a truck. He was an owner/operator and drove for Pritchett Trucking. After approximately 25 years, he retired and went to work for the United States Postal Service where he would work for the next 27 years. Being a simple man, he loved fishing with his son & others, camping with family & friends, enjoying Gator football, watching westerns, and listening to bluegrass music under his barn. Above all, he was a Godly man who enjoyed serving the Lord, not only as a Deacon at Sardis Baptist Church, but in his everyday life. He stood steadfast in his beliefs and was a prayer warrior for many people in our community and for our nation. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Raymond Hersey, Elbert Hersey, Denise Hersey Norman and stepsiblings Becky Reddish, and William Newham.
Dwight is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois Hersey of Worthington Springs; his children, Pam (Timothy) Sallie, Dwight Jr. “Buddy” (Wendy) Hersey, and Karrie (John) Patrick all of Lake Butler; 10 grandchildren, Michael, Brittney (Andy), Brook (Austin), Macie, Chase, Chelsie (Anthony), Treyce, Ryan, Jaci, and Malana; 5 great-grandchildren, Aden, Bryson, Gunner, Easton, and Adelina; his siblings, Margaret Brannen of Keystone, Donald (Charlotte) Hersey of Palatka, Dewitt (Helen) Hersey of Theressa, John Wayne (Peggy) Hersey of Theressa, Doley (Mary) Hersey of Theressa, Lancin (Charlotte) Hersey of Brooker, and step sibling David Newham
The services to honor the life of Dwight will be held on Friday, January 15, beginning at 12:00 for the visitation and funeral at 1:00 at his home church, Sardis Baptist. The graveside will be immediately following. Pastor Paul O’Steen and Brother Lewis Cooper will be officiating the services. His interment will be at Swift Creek Mt Zion Cemetery.
