Dr. Marvin Wade Johnson, departed this world on August 10, 2026, in Gainesville, Florida, at the remarkable age of ninety-five. Born on June 13, 1931, in Selma, Alabama, Dr. Johnson’s life was a testament to enduring intellect, steadfast faith, devoted service, and boundless love for his family and community.

From the earliest days of his youth in Selma, the foundations of character and ambition were set in place for a life marked by both achievement and humility. After high school, Dr. Johnson served his country by enlisting in the United States Coast Guard, where he worked as a medic aboard ships. His service helped create the pathway for him to pursue his calling in medicine, and in 1960, he graduated from medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Johnson began his medical residency in Puerto Rico before continuing his training at the University of Florida. Upon completing his residency, he accepted his first position in Central Florida, where he practiced medicine until 1984. That year, he took the courageous leap of moving to Lake Butler and opening his own medical practice. For the next 42 years, Dr. Johnson devoted himself to that practice and the people who depended upon him before ultimately retiring. All told, his service to medicine, his community, and others spanned more than 62 years.

His patients were met with unwavering commitment, compassion, and care. His infamous “magic shot” brought relief to countless people throughout North Florida and is still commonly requested today. But Dr. Johnson was far more than a family doctor. He held medical board certifications in family medicine, emergency medicine, nuclear medicine, geriatrics, and pathology. His medical instincts were extraordinary; he could often recognize and diagnose conditions simply by observing someone, even outside the walls of his practice. The impact of his remarkable medical career is immeasurable, and his presence will be deeply missed by the generations of patients and families he served.

Dr. Johnson was not only a gifted physician; he had a larger-than-life personality. His energy, compassion, grace, and humility were unmatched. He could almost always be found with a smile on his face, ready with a joke, a witty remark, or a few words to brighten someone’s day. He lived an active life and embraced the things he loved. Whether fishing, hunting in the woods, tending his garden, or making his homemade wine, he was always willing and ready to spend time with his friends and family.

At the center of Dr. Johnson’s world was his beloved family, whose lives were interwoven with his through bonds of affection, devotion, and mutual respect. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jennie Reed, whose companionship was a source of constant joy and comfort.

He also leaves behind his beloved children: Edythe Johnson of Lake Butler, Marvin Wade (Shea) Johnson Jr. of Hudson, FL, Eva Johnson of St. Petersburg, Whit (Candice) Johnson of Starke, Andrea (Dan) Henrie of St. Petersburg, and Holly (Andrew) Cain of Gainesville. 

Dr. Johnson was lovingly known as “Grandpa” to Claudia Johnson, Sofie Johnson, Carson Johnson, Parker Johnson, Lydia Obenshain, Wesley Obenshain, John Burton, Eve Burton, Darien Henrie, Jadon Henrie, Brannon Henrie, Locklyn Cain, Truex Cain, Paxton Cain, and Liberty Cain. He was affectionately known as “Dr. Grandpa” to Caspian Johnson and Beckett Johnson. Each of his grandchildren carries forward a spark of his light and a piece of the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind.

His circle of love extended further to his sister-in-law, Jeanie Johnson, and brother-in-law, Robert Combs.

Dr. Johnson was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Sophie Johnson; his brothers, Dr. Edward Lewis Johnson, Dr. Herbert Cecil Johnson, and Charles Milton Johnson; his sisters, Annie Wilda Johnson, Edith Mae Johnson, Edna Grace Johnson Smedley, and Mildred Ann Johnson Combs; and a stillborn child. Their memories remained a part of his life, a constellation of familial love and devotion woven throughout the remarkable story of Dr. Johnson’s own life.

A funeral honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Marvin Wade Johnson will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at First Christian Church in Lake Butler, Florida. Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The service will be officiated by Bro. Art Peterson. Immediately afterward, Dr. Johnson will be laid to rest at Dekle Cemetery, a final journey marked by reverence, gratitude, and love.

Though the world is quieter with Dr. Johnson’s passing, his presence endures in the countless lives he touched. His warmth, integrity, humor, faith, and unwavering dedication to both family and vocation created a legacy that will be remembered and cherished for generations.

He leaves behind more than the accomplishments of an extraordinary medical career. He leaves behind generations of patients who were cared for, families who trusted him, friends who laughed alongside him, and a family who had the privilege of knowing him not simply as Dr. Johnson, but as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
