Donald Eugene Hicks

September 6, 2025 — September 5, 2025

Lake Butler

Donald Eugene Hicks, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2025, just two days shy of his 67th birthday, after an extended illness.

Born on September 7, 1958, Donald was raised on Smokey Road in Baker County, Florida. He graduated from Baker County High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Air Force as a medic, stationed in Colorado Springs. After his military service, he returned to Florida and earned his degree from the University of Florida — a true Gator through and through.

Don dedicated 35 years of his life to the Florida Department of Corrections, where he not only found a career but also the love of his life. He met his wife, Toni, while working at the Department, and together they built a life full of love, laughter, and purpose in Lake Butler, Florida. Don and Toni were married for 38 wonderful years and raised two daughters, Ashley Biddix and Amy Hicks. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Landon Biddix.

Don is survived by his sister, Judy Kaye Riggle; brothers-in-law Kenneth (Robin) Clyatt and Curtis Clyatt; sister-in-law Prudence Pate; and a large extended family who adored him. He was a devoted and loyal brother — a title he held with great pride. As a brother to the late Woodrow Hicks and a brother-in-law to the late Frank Riggle and Kirk Pate, Donald filled the role of protector, storyteller, and steady presence. His bond with his siblings was deep, enduring, and full of heart.

He was a proud uncle to many nieces and nephews, each of whom he cherished dearly: Randy Hicks, Billy Hicks, John Hicks, Dillan Clyatt, Kaleb Clyatt, Paden Clyatt, Kurstie Hicks, Danielle Mouser, Taylor Pate, and Lori Sweetapple. He is preceded in death by his nephew, Ronnie Hicks.

Don was a man of strong values, quiet strength, and a generous spirit. He had a great love for the outdoors — especially hunting, fishing, and watching the skies for hawks. But one of his greatest passions was beekeeping. He found peace in the hum of the hives and took joy in tending to his bees. He loved teaching others about the art and science of beekeeping, always eager to share his knowledge and encourage anyone interested to give it a try. Whether he was mentoring a new beekeeper or showing his grandson the beauty of nature, Don's love for learning and sharing never faded.

And while he was famously stubborn — and he’d be the first to admit it — that same stubbornness was a sign of his deep convictions, fierce loyalty, and unwavering determination. You always knew where he stood, and when he loved you, he loved you with his whole heart.

He was a gifted storyteller whose tales were equal parts wisdom, humor, and heart — a voice that will be deeply missed around every gathering.

A celebration of Don’s life will be held on Tuesday, September 9th at Harmony Free Will Baptist Church in Lake Butler, Florida. Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM with the funeral service following at 4:00 PM.

He leaves behind a legacy of service, love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Donald Eugene Hicks was a rock to many and a blessing to all who knew him. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
