Donald Edward Floyd, affectionately known to family and friends as Don, passed away on October 3, 2026, at the Veterans Hospital in Lake City, Florida. Born on October 28, 1952, in Gainesville, Florida, Don lived a life defined by service, determination, hard work, and an unwavering love for his family.
In 1970, Don answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. During his military career, he served with honor and pride as an aircraft mechanic, dutifully fulfilling his responsibilities during critical military operations in Vietnam. His dedication, skill, and commitment to his country earned him several military commendations and recognitions for his service. In 1974, Don was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force, having attained the rank of Sergeant. His service to our nation remained a source of great pride throughout his life.
Although his military service concluded decades ago, the sacrifices Don made in service to his country extended far beyond his years in uniform. Throughout his later life, he faced significant health challenges associated with his military service, ultimately enduring prolonged illnesses that contributed to his passing. Even as those challenges became increasingly difficult, Don demonstrated the same strength, perseverance, and determination that had characterized his life.
Following his military career and for a great deal of time after, Don possessed a natural talent and profound love for roping and rodeo. His passion for the sport was a meaningful part of his life, reflecting his adventurous spirit, determination, and appreciation for the traditions of the cowboy way of life. Eventually, Don pursued a career in the culinary arts, where his talents and work ethic led him to work as a chef. Later, he transitioned into the field of finance, continuing to demonstrate his versatility, dedication, and willingness to embrace new opportunities. In retirement, Don found enjoyment and purpose in woodworking, spending countless hours creating, building, and completing projects. His craftsmanship reflected his patience, creativity, and satisfaction in working with his hands.
Above all, Don's greatest pride was his family. He treasured the opportunities to share in the lives of his daughters and grandsons. Even as his health declined and illness became an increasingly difficult part of his daily life, Don made every effort to be present for the moments that mattered. Whether attending activities, celebrating accomplishments, or simply spending time together, he remained devoted to supporting his daughters and grandsons whenever his health allowed. His presence was a reflection of the deep love and pride he held for his family.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Deborah Floyd; his daughters, Leslie Canciglia and her husband, Michael, and Stephanie Sellers and her husband, Phillip; and his cherished grandsons, Jesse Canciglia and Ryker Sellers. He is also survived by his sisters, Vivian Womble and her husband, Kent, Charlotte Simmons and her husband, Chuck, and Maria Floyd, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Flora Floyd.
Don's legacy is one of service, sacrifice, perseverance, and love. He will be remembered for his dedication to his country, the many talents he shared throughout his life, and the pride he took in the family he loved so dearly. Though his earthly journey has ended, the memories he created and the love he leaves behind will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
A graveside service honoring Don's life and military service will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Cemetery.
