Alvin L. Ponds, age 84, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, at Shands of Gainesville. Born on May 24, 1942, Alvin lived a life marked by dependability, love, and hard work. A God-fearing man with a straightforward nature, he was known for never meeting a stranger and always telling you like it is.
Throughout his life, Alvin found joy in simple pleasures such as watching westerns and sci-fi shows and movies while sipping his coffee. He was also a passionate supporter of the Florida State Seminoles, embodying a spirit of loyalty and enthusiasm that touched those around him.
Alvin's legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of his family. He is survived by his loving children: Alvin "Al" Ponds, Jr., Robert "Robby" Ponds, Marlene Ponds, Judy Stinson, Joanne Springer, Felicia Ponds, Alicia Ponds, Jennifer Ponds, and Annette Ponds. Alvin was also a much-beloved brother to Alice Ponds Kinsey. His family grew even larger through 20 grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren who all carry forward his memory.
The sorrow of his passing is tempered by the memory of those who preceded him in death: his parents, Londo and Idell Ponds; his brother, J.R. Ponds; and his grandchildren, Teagan, Keeley, and Dylan, whose spirits remain alive in the hearts of family and friends.
A graveside service in honor of Alvin L. Ponds will be held on June 22, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery located at 1444 SE County Road 18, Lake City, FL 32024.
