Graveside services for Joan Allison Henehan, 90, a resident of Gainesville, Florida will be held
at 10:15 a.m., Friday, July 11, 2014 at Barrancas National Military Cemetery, Naval Air Base,
Pensacola, Florida. All friends and family are invited to attend. A dedicatory prayer service is
scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
Joan passed away July 3, 2014 at the Lake Butler Hospital in Lake Butler, Florida. She was born
December 29, 1923 in La Jolla, California the daughter of Edward Chester Allison and Charlotta
Snow. She was united in marriage to Alva Douglas Henehan on August 21, 1943 at Santa Anna
Air Base, Santa Ana, California. He preceded her in death
November 1, 1990. They were married for 47 years.
Joan volunteered as a map maker for Allied forces during
World War II. She was a volunteer "gray lady" at many hospitals
during her lifetime. She was co-founder of R.A.C.E., an
Okaloosa County organization promoting horse therapy for
the developmentally and intelectually disabled individuals.
She was an active volunteer with The ARC, an association
for people with intelectual and developmental disabilities all
her life. Her daughters, Leslie Henehan Jespersen and Teresa
Henehan Trujillo cared for her the last 15 years of her life.
The family gives them and everyone else who cared for Joan
their sincerest gratitude
She is survived by her five children and their spouses; Alva Douglas Jr. (Carmen) Lima, Peru;
Peter Douglas (Marci) Argyle, Texas; Leslie (Wayne) Jespersen, Gainesville, Florida; Teresa
Henehan (Paul) Trujillo; and Deirdre Allison Henehan; and 19 grandchildren and 31 great
grandchildren.
